What did you do for fun as a kid?

And now, for something just plain fun . . .

I get tired of all work and no play, so today's blog is about having fun.  What do you and your family like to do for fun?

When I was growing up, we lived in a huge old farmhouse, the kind where they added on several times.  So we had all these doors, some that weren't really used much anymore, but led to the outside.  Even upstairs, there was a tiny bedroom tacked on with a door to a little flat roof area.

So when our parents would go away for a while, the 5 of us would sweetly wave good bye, then instantly the atmosphere was charged with electricity.  We divided into two teams, the perceived stronger team having to take our youngest brother, Jeff, because he was so small.

Then one team called the inside turf, and the other team had the outside.  From the front porch, we shouted "GO!" and the inside team went in and started locking doors.

The outside team had to try to get in before we could keep them out.  The trouble was, there were so many doors!

Invariably, someone would have sneaked a ladder over to the little roof and unlocked the bathroom window to climb in that way.  Or come up through the basement if we overlooked the basement door.

And then we'd switch!  We even played this game in the barns, with interesting variations of locking someone (usually me) into a horse stall and forgetting about me.  To get revenge, I locked my sister in the horse trailer.

Unfortunately, mother got home soon after and let her out, and she was able to produce real tears to describe her horrible ordeal.  That was the last spanking I ever got.

My children played a similar game unbeknownst to me, but it involved being on the roof . . . and a lenient babysitter.  Fortunately, no one got hurt before I got wind of it.

What did you do for fun? Write in your stories and I'll post them here!
